| | My newest addition to the family has proven to us that she can pull her own weight, and bring home the venison! On Saturday evening, December 13, the last evening before the last day of firearms deer season in Kansas, my friend and employer, Jared, embarked on our mission, Operation Shoot Deer Before Season Closes. Jared picked me up at my place in the "Towmator", his Victory Red '08 GMC Sierra SLT crew cab long bed 4X4 duramax, and his '06 Arctic Cat 500 TRV 4-wheeler on the back, and headed for the woods. Upon arriving in the field, we donned out blaze orange garments, and our weapons, a 12 GA slug gun for him, and a .308 Win. single shot for me. We parked our hineys in the median of I-Kill Deer308 between Deerbeddingsville, and Deergrazingtown, KS, and waited, looking for any sign of oncoming traffic. As darkness neared, my comrade and myself began to discuss our options. We could wait there 'til dark and see no deer, or be proactive(not the anti-zit stuff), and move toward the suburbs of Deerbeddingsville where we might see some of its residents, and maybe get a shot at one. We crawled. On our hands, guns, and knees, we crawled along the tree and weed line to a place near a wider patch of wheat, where we spotted several does grazing. We basically decided that I should go first, very carefully, and try to get a shot with my rifle since they were at some distance away. While still behind the cover of trees and brush, we both got on all twos(knees), and were deep in a discussion of strategic planning when, out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw something resembling a male whitetailed deer. It took me a second to decide that it actually was one, not a tree, and that he was about 55 yards away standing straight up, and facing precisely towards us, looking very intently at these curious 3 1/2' tall creatures. I uttered some rather surprised words in a whisper to Jared while staring wide-eyed at the buck, after which he joined me in staring. As the deer slowly turned a took several very slow steps to the side in a direction perpendicular to us, Jared urged me that I might administer a sleeping pill. I argued for only a short time before shouldering my rifle with one 10.69 gram sleeping pill, placing the crosshairs over its lungs, and squeezed off the shot. We exchanged high-fives, got the git 'r done deer huntin' machine, and hauled it back to the truck. Once at the farm where Jared's parents live, his mom snapped a picture for me, and here it is. The poor quality of the picture is because it was taken with my cell phone, and not something decent, but you get a rough idea what it was. It was a small 8-point, weighing an estimated 150Lbs., and in very good shape.
Thank you, Jared, for taking me with you on your hunting ground, and for all the help you gave recovering, and preparing the deer.
